Another Girl burnt alive! Whose daughter was she?

“They were five men, they dragged me out of the house, they kicked me like a football, and then they poured gasoline on me and set me on fire; I recognized ‘Master Shaukat’ and yes, Arshad….” These were more or less the words recorded by 19 year old Maria Sadaqat, uttered in a police station but also recorded, gasping in agony, on a video, which I have seen today; this is now her ‘dying declaration’ acceptable in law, but will she get justice? Will her tormentors and killers ever be punished? Will an example be set? Is this only about her poor father and mother and four sisters or is it about all of us? These are some of the questions I was trying to find answers for the past 2 days, and these are the questions all of us, all of you need to wrestle with.

Maria Sadaqat was only 19. One of my daughters is five, other is eleven. Maria was the eldest of five sisters and one son, children of a poor mechanic. My daughters are being raised by a father, who is saving all his pennies so that his daughters can run away from this land of savage dishonorable men, of lawless society and impotent criminal justice system. After her FA, Maria started to work as a teacher in a private school, established by a certain ‘Master Shaukat’. Master Shaukat owned this school and his son, Haroon, was also a teacher in the same school. This is close to a village, Dewal Sharif, not far from Pakistan’s summer resort of Murree.

These wooded, haunted hills used to be the epicenter of Pakistan’s amorous love. In 1960’s when Pakistan brimmed with hope and confidence, Murree – fashioned by British on Shimla- used to be a Mecca for lovers who flocked here from as far away as Karachi. My parents spent their honey moon here, in the wooded British era Cecil and Bright land hotels. I grew up listening from my mother about Kashmir point, Pindi Point, her horse rides, Ayubia chairlift and cherries. In one of my school trips here, with my class, I held and straightened the gun while ‘she’, one of my class fellows, took shots and burst the balloons. We giggled, we had strange sensations running down our spines, I clapped for her, we thought we were in love – at least till the next few days, then came the exams; Physics and Chemistry drained all hormones. But I still have her pictures. Murree used to be full of all kinds of vendors; horse wallas, snake charmers, balloon shooters, magic card wallas, and those who offered you all kinds of tricks including the kaleidoscopes full of strange scenes from the world. None of those scenes was as horrible, as grotesque as that happened to Maria Sadaqat in Dewal Sharif, dragged from her house, snatched away from her little sister of six, kicked like a football by several men, doused by petrol and then set on fire. Murree hills of 2016. What is happening to this country?

Master Shaukat, has been arrested by the police. He is a man in his sixties. He has taken an oath on Quran that he is innocent. He says, he has not done what Maria has recorded in her dying declaration. Maria’s relatives have told media and police and the whole village knows it and many have privately told our reporters that Shaukat’s son, Haroon, wanted to marry Maria. But Maria rejected him. Her relatives hasten to add that Haroon was around 40, he was married before and had children. So does that mean that a woman can not refuse to marry a man, her suitor? A woman has no free choice? She has to have a good reason to refuse, to reject a proposal? She can not just refuse to marry because she does not like you? She is not interested? She has other ideas?

I wish I could narrate to Haroon and his father, ‘Master Shaukat’ that I have lost count of the girls and the women who refused, rebuffed and rejected me in school, in college, in university, and later in the marriage market. Some of them are good friends, and some of them I came across, many years later and I thanked my stars, ‘God! I am so lucky; I did not get married to her’. I would have stopped growing. But I am being unfair, cruel, dishonest and hypocrite. There is no comparison here; life and circumstances allowed me to become a post-modern man; Haroon and Shaukat are stuck in a medieval era of fragile egos and primitive sense of honor.

Pakistan Human Rights Commission has called it yet another crime against woman. Yes! It is. But this is not all. Father of Maria, who is psychologically drenched by his agony, who threatened self-immolation if police did not arrest the killers and her uncles who were protesting on roads are men too. Men who are abused, men who are crying and men who are weak and helpless. Describing it in binary terms of men and women won’t ever take us to the solutions. There is a bigger problem here. And this relates to issues of power in defining social order. This also relates to a failure of criminal justice system that has not established, not internalized a ‘deterrence’ for the ‘aggressor’. Master Shaukat is not a typical school master, working in a government school for salary. He was the owner of the school in which Maria worked as a teacher. In that poor village of Dewal Sharif, he is somewhat rich, he is powerful in that local context. And Maria is the poor daughter of a mechanic. Maria was weak; Its about power. There are women in Islamabad, in Lahore, in Karachi, all over Pakistan who we all are afraid of; because they are powerful. It is about power.

Many years ago, I watched ‘Disclosure’. Hollywood blockbuster, based on the novel by Dr. Michael Crichton. Harvard educated MD, who turned into a writer, a tv producer, a film maker. A post-modern man; some one who should inspire all of us. Dr. Crichton created ‘Jurrasic Park’ – first movie I watched with my first daughter – and he created the unforgettable ‘ER’ for American TV; and he wrote, ‘Disclosure’ that was turned into a powerful film in 1994. Michel Douglas, an IT executive, finds himself becoming subordinate to his old flame, ex-girl friend, beautiful Demi Moore. An angry Demi Moore has a plot; she drugs Michel and assaults him, and then blames him, next morning for sexual assault. Its an interesting drama and you can watch the movie to know what happened. But there was one sentence which riveted in my memory; one sentence that suddenly opened up the whole world of meaning in front of me. One sentence that was the gist of whole novel, something Harvard trained doctor, Dr. Michel Crichton wanted his readers to understand. Michel Douglas (the actor; not the character) is confronted by his wife who believes he has raped Demi Moore. He retorts: ‘Rape is an act of power; where did I ever have power in that equation’. Michael Crichton was severely criticized by the American feminists for showing a woman raping a man. He defended his ‘reversal of roles’ by pointing out that without this, his message about ‘role of power’ would not be understood. I don’t know if the often repeated psychiatric expression, ‘Rape is not about sex, its about power’ was a common phrase in literature before that or nor. I suspect, Dr. Crichton played a role in making us understand this.

If anyone of you absorbs it then I will feel I have not failed in writing these lines, sleepless in Islamabad at 6am in the morning. I bring this understanding as someone who studied medicine, someone who was deeply interested in psychiatry, was raised by a doctor, someone who joined Civil Services of Pakistan to become powerful and realized the sheer impotency of Pakistan’s failing administrative structure and someone who found ‘nirvana’ in simplicity of honest expression and writing. Power to post-modern man is meaningless if cannot be used for the larger good of society. There has to be a purpose bigger than you. Expressions of power to satisfy primitive ego – as we have seen in Dewal Sharif – are symptoms of a pre-modern social order.

Master Shaukat of Dewal Sharif is not powerful for us; he is not powerful to girls and women in Lahore and Islamabad, he is not powerful to Human Rights Commission of Pakistan but there in that small village in the hills, he was all powerful to Maria Sadaqat. Maria’s refusal to marry his son, his Haroon, his progeny, his respect, his offspring, his creation, infuriates and insults him because he is powerful. And he is powerful in a social order, in a system which has no other value except ‘power’. Is this not generally true about Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi, about whole of Pakistan. Most people respect me because they see me with powerful men, grilling politicians and leaders and challenging the government and they fallaciously internalize that I am powerful. They don’t respect me because of my knowledge. Pakistan’s social and political order is all about power. All underdeveloped polities are like that. But Pakistan has another problem.

Religions, all religions – Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism list is endless – have one central point, one central idea around which they stand: protection of the weak from the wrath, the aggression of the powerful. Religions are ideas for justice, religions degenerate to ritualism, but all religions are bigger, much bigger than their rituals. And all law, all basic law, whether its is Lex Caesarea or modern Common law is originally derived from principles of religion: protection of the weak from the aggression of the powerful. Any system of law that fails to protect weak from the wrath  and aggression of the powerful is not a system of law and justice; it is something else. Its tyranny.

Pakistan’s criminal justice system has degenerated to become a tool, an instrument of control in the hands of rich and powerful; it has lost all its ability, all its capacity to provide a check on the ambitions of the powerful. Criminal Justice System, can never hold, prosecute and punish all criminals and aggressors, it is not possible for any system of law enforcement to do that; objective of law enforcement is to create a ‘deterrence’ and ‘internalization of law’ to send a general message, ‘thou shall be punished, thou can be punished’ by creating a credible fear in the people that their actions will bear consequence. Pakistan has lost it, lost that ‘deterrence’ it has lost that long ago.

A country in which elections can be manipulated in broad day light, in which Commissions of Enquiry headed by honorable men are set up to cover murder and mayhem, a country in which ‘Model Town Massacre’ can be blamed on few police officers, a country in which ‘Panama Files Scandal’ can be brushed aside without any logical explanation, a country in which all democratic opposition is part of the government in one way or the other, a country in which innocent can be endlessly blamed, prosecuted or scandalized, demonized for diversion purposes, a country in which paupers have become billionaires while holding public office and no explanation is ever due or can be demanded, a country in which unelected ‘powerful children’ of the dynasts can command the top public officials is a country and society built around one simple principle: Crude Exercise of Power.

Without addressing the issue of exercise of power, without holding powerful accountable in Islamabad, in Lahore, in Karachi, in Peshawar, in Quetta or Muzaffarabad, without creating a sense of ‘deterrence’ from the top, all around, overall in the system, you cannot expect ‘Master Shaukat’ to behave, in Dewal Sharif, and you cannot expect ‘Maria’ to be safe. Pakistan Human Right Commission will keep on telling you that this is Man versus Woman, but this is about power. And trust me this system can not get justice for this Maria or that Maria. Yes! The culprits have been arrested, but the police action looks less than credible.

Unlike the DPO in Abbottabad, a month ago, (who was taking calls past midnight) Punjab Police have not shared any details, they are hesitant in taking calls or just insensitive, it looks like a repeat of so many, dozens of previous cases, in which no convictions are obtained in the end. DPO, Khurram Rasheed, and his IGP, Nasir Durrani, in KP, in case of Ambareen, registered the case on behalf of the state; in Murree case has been registered by family of Maria; in Abottabad, Police investigated through ‘Call Data Record’ (CDR) and apprehended culprits through its own investigations, in case of Maria, CM Punjab has appointed a three member committee to investigate, and in this case in Murree it is all dependent upon the complaint and ‘Dying Declaration’ and local people allied with the killers have already started harassing media and started insisting that Maria has committed suicide. Usual process of watering down the nature of a crime has already started. Remember the Ayesha (or was that Amna) in Muzaffargarh, who was gang raped and who, almost two years ago, burnt herself to death, outside a police station? CM Shahbaz Sharif had personally gone there- descending from a helicopter from the skies dressed in white as an Avatar – to reprimand and suspend police officers, what happened? Google and find for yourself. It was not Shahbaz Sharif’s personal failure; he is more sensitive in such matters than anyone else in Punjab, but his system, the system under him, does not work.

Tonight With Moeed Pirzada: Budget 2016-2017_PART3

Mr. Zubair Umar, Chairman Privatization commission, Abdul Kareem Dhedy of the AKD securities and Mian Mehmood Ur Rasheed, Prominent PTI leader and member national assembly expressed their views on the budget presented by the finance Minister of the state, Mr. Ishaq Dar, for the year 2016-17. Mr. Zubair, upon being asked what the major challenges the government had to face for the budget, said that in the first 2-3 years the government was committed towards the stabilization of the economy, and the next two years or so were to be utilized in growth. Mr. Zubair said that the achievement of the budget was the agricultural fronts that were addressed, as last year agriculture was not focused upon and that caused a collapse in that sector. The lowering of the prices of Urea products were a direct testimony to that. The major achievement was the massive increase in tax collection, a staggering 60%. Mian Mehmood Ur Rasheed was critical of the fact that Mr.Dar and the government had failed to deliver. He said that there is no relief in the budget for a common man and that the minimum wage decided for a worker, 14-15000 is too less to run a domestic clockwork. He said that had Pakistan Tehreek e Insaaf been in the government they would have raised it to at least 20,000. Mr. Rasheed said that the government had failed to make a difference. Mr. Dhedy was of the opinion that the stress laid upon the agricultural sector was a political move to woo the farmers in an early election stunt. Mr. Dhedy said that if the government indeed had the farmer’s best interests at heart then they would’ve catered to their needs last year, when it was desperately required. AKD also said that the common man does not directly benefit from this budget.

Tonight With Moeed Pirzada: Budget 2016-2017 PART1 !!!

Asad Jamal analysis on Cyber Crime !!!

Advocate Asad Jamal from the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan spoke on the issue. Mr Jamal initially criticized the legislative structures that are, in his opinion, not working in the right direction. Mr. Jamal said that there are no legislative bodies around the world that function or pass bills without appropriate relevant research on the matter. The advocate said that the Government should think over the question that whether if the internet users are aware of the complete and elaborate implications of this bill. The Government should have better communication with the end users on the scenario. He further added that there are a lot of open ended sections on the bill that need to be addressed on an immediate basis before putting this legislation in proper effect. Mr. Jamal was also of the opinion that the cyber terrorism section is redundant as it is already present in 11W of the Anti Terrorism Act of Pakistan. Also, there are some sections, as if in sync with other legislations that this tenure has seen, can be categorized as “over-legislations”. Mr. Jamal said that the section 34 that authorizes the PTA to seize any objectionable material on the cyber space is potentially dangerous and in direct contradiction to privacy and social liberties.

Miss Gul Bukhari Analysis on Cyber Crime !!!

Ms Gul Bukhari, a prominent cyber-activist and social media personality expressed her views on the Cyber-crime bill. Miss Bukhari said that the narrative can be divided into two: The reservations against the bill and the state powers flexed through it. The reservations, she said, have mostly been addressed. Most of the areas have been covered but there are still a lot of ambiguity and grey areas to be addressed. The state powers, she said, are too dominant in this connotation. Miss Bukhari said that the issue to get a probable cause established before apprehension was not addressed. Infact, the situation was made worse by extending powers of an investigative officer to the point that he can make enquiries or arrests without a warrant, in the case that he notifies the court within 24 hours. Miss Bukhari also said that the data sharing legislation that convicts a person to 3 months in prison for sharing data is flawed in itself. She said that secret data doesn’t need to be shared via social media or private inboxes; it can be transferred manually or misused by the felon himself. Miss Bukhari said that reservations like these intimate the need for a review of this bill, for it to be made comprehensive. She also said that there are headings in the bill that require elaboration, such as: the section for berating the glory of Islam needs to be clarified. Similarly the section for anti-state statements needs to be made comprehensive. She said that so much grey area is not appropriate. Miss Bukhari was of the opinion that the powers vested in PTA officials on the decisive ends are unacceptable. When asked how effective the bill would prove to be, Miss Bukhari said that it’s very difficult to state that with the current position of the bill. Miss Bukhari said that the security paradigm and cyber crime should be kept separate; the integration of these two has presented the whole problem.

Miss Nighat DaaD Analysis on Cyber Crime !!!

Miss Nighat Daad, prominent Cyber-activist, lawyer and founder of the Digital Rights foundation expressed her views on the Cyber crime bill that was passed on the 26th of April, 2016.
Miss Nighat was of the opinion that the bill had not been worked over. She said that only 3 to 4 drafts had been compiled and when the bill was presented, the opposition was not paid heed to. The drafts were uploaded on the National Assembly’s website while the comprehensive bill was uploaded 2 weeks later.
The activist said that the reservations of the people are too many; it is a direct abrogation of civil liberties and privacy. Also, she said that there were concerns with the vague terminologies used, which could be misinterpreted and bent to victimize internet users. There was also the over-lapping of certain regulations such as the Section 10, Cyber-terrorism. She said that the Pakistan Anti-terrorism act already covers Cyber-terrorism under section 11W, so the section 10 is redundant and unnecessary.
Miss Daad was also of the opinion that the section that prosecutes cyber stalking should be made distinct and should be elaborate, as cyber-stalking is not always with the intention of harm.
When she was asked how effective this bill would prove, Miss Daad said that if the law is not abrogating civil liberties and privacy and is being used for the sole purpose of apprehending cyber criminals, then this bill would be a welcome prospect. But the state that it is in as of now, it would instigate nothing but protests from the internet users.

TRTWORLD: Moeed Pirzada Analysis on Afghan Taliban !!!

Dr Moeed Pirzada gives his analysis in Turkish news channel TRT World to discuss whether confrontation or consultation is the best path to peace in Afghanistan. Dr Pirzada said while commenting on the issue that Pakistan Administration failed to understand the reason why US decided to eliminate Taliban Leader Mullah Mansoor? Because subsequently Mullah Akhtar Mansoor was engaged with western world and Chinese from past two years and took part in peace talks initiated in Muree Pakistan. Even Taliban agreed to declare Kabul the capital of Afghanistan to be conflict free zone in the first step. But that was disrupted with the announcement of previous Taliban head Mullah Umar’s death. At that time US and Chinese were also present as an observer in Taliban and Afghan Government talks held in Muree Pakistan with mediation of Pakistan. Dr Pirzada tells that the fifth round of current quadrilateral talks on for Afghanistan peace process held few days before Mullah Mnasoor’s death and the reason why it was not successful so far was that US denied to fulfill any demands from Taliban although four of them were not very difficult to accept. That includes accepting Qatar office of Taliban, lift ban from travelling of Taliban leaders across the world, to stop calling them as terrorists and freeing some of their prisoners from Guantanamo bay prison. Only two of the conditions were tough like enforcement of Sharia in Afghanistan and Exit of Nato Allied forces from Afghanistan. Dr Pirzada said that it seems US was looking for creating conditions in the Afghanistan to justify their existence in Afghanistan and it might be because of Chinese presence in the region and their trade route and Chinese Pakistan Economic Corridor.

Tonight With Moeed Pirzada: ” Sheikh Rasheed predictions for future through his crystal ball “

Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad President of Awami Muslim League in and exclusive discussion with Dr Moeed Pirzada. Interview was recorded on 29th May 2016 when opposition and Government committees for Terms of Reference Consensus seemed to be in a situation of a dead lock. According to Shaikh Rasheed political and religious opposition parties would unite and come on roads on this issue of Terms of Reference for Panama papers investigations after the month of Holy month Ramadan.
Open Heart surgery of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was due on 31st May 2016 in London and while commenting on it Sheikh Rasheed conveyed his best wishes to the Prime Minister for his complete recovery from the operation. But he said that Prime minister will not be able to meet all internal and external challenges faced to the country so he should nominate either his brother Shahbaz Sharif Chief Minister Punjab or Ch Nisar interior minister as Prime minister. He said it will be good service to democracy. Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad said that almost all political leaders have crossed age of 65 years and it seems that they will die in same year. While commenting on Pak China Economic Corridor sheikh Rasheed said that china is also desperate to complete it soon because there is no other route of transportation left for china with the rest of the world. But that could only happen if both civil and military leadership of Pakistan gets united. Shaikh Rasheed ahmad said that his meeting with PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto was coincidental but his perception about bilawal bhitto has changed after meeting him. Shaikh Rasheed stressed that Bilawal Bhutto and Asif Ali Zardari’s political ideologies are totally opposite.
Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad said that US is destroying Muslim world in the region. Americans are very mean and selfish. Once they used Ex President Zial ul haq for Afghan soviet war and latter they exploded him in a plane.

Tonight with Moeed Pirzada: Women Protection Bill & Islamic Laws !!!

Dr Moeed Pirzada said that the latest example focuses on the CII75-page women protection bill. Clearly in response to the Punjab Women Protection bill rejected as un-Islamic by the CII the council, under its chairman Maulana Mohammad Khan Sheerani, has suggested that a husband be allowed to lightly beat his wife if needed, among other such clauses. While talking to Dr Moeed Pirzada Mufti Naeem said that Totally Disagree with Maulana sherani recommendation lighten beaten. Mufti Naeem is promoting violence against women through his condemnation of the women protection bill.
Khanum Syeda Tayyaba Bukhari said that Women protection bill will be made with recommendation of islamic scholars.

Tonight With Moeed Pirzada: YOM. E. TAKBEER. THE DAY PAKISTAN BECOMES FIRST MUSLIM NUCLEAR POWER !!!

Dr Moeed Pirzada in this segment explains in detail two important issues. First one was related to date 28th May when Pakistan first Islamic country to test its nuclear program on 28th May 1998. Program went on-air on 18th Anniversary of Pakistan’s nuclear tests. On May 28, 1998 Pakistan announced that it had successfully conducted five nuclear tests. Dr Pirzada said that Pakistan’s nuclear weapons program was established in 1972 by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, who founded the program while scientifically Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan was the founder of nuclear program of Pakistan. Dr Pirzada explained that US is not treating India and Pakistan on equal basis for nuclear supplier Group membership although both countries are not signatories of Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty. Dr Pirzada said that Western world started propagating against Pakistan that its nuclear program is not safe. There is sectarian violence in the country and this Islamic bomb can fall into wrong hands. Dr Pirzada also highlighted that few people who are in minority in the country are against Pakistan’s nuclear disclosures and they think that just like Israel Pakistan should have kept this secret. Dr Pirzada said that it was necessary for Pakistan to conduct these tests to maintain balance of power in the region. According to Dr Abdul qadeer khan Pakistan got this nuclear technology in 1980s but then President Gen Zia ul Haq stopped the experts to conduct nuclear test as Pakistan was fighting during soviet invasion in Afghanistan. Another importance issue circulating in the media from few days was also discussed in the program. It was the proposed women protection bill by Islamic Ideology Council. Most criticized point in that proposal was that husbands were allowed to slightly beat their wives in case they don’t obey husbands. Dr Pirzada also conveyed his sincere wishes for health of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Prime Minister’s open heart surgery was scheduled in London after few days.

Tonight With Moeed Pirzada: Youm e Takbir 28 MAY 1998 !!!

On the occasion of Youm e Takbir, Dr. Moeed Pirzada invited a renowned scientist Dr. Samar Mubarakmand in his show in the second part of the show.
Dr. Samar expressed the challenges after India declared itself Nuclear State. The rhetoric of India towards Pakistan was very hard and it pressurized Pakistan to test its nuclear weapon. It became necessary to keep the balance of power in the region.
Dr. Pirzada said that many scholar and analysts think that Pakistan should have kept itself covert nuclear power and what has it given to Pakistan. Dr. Samar responded that Israel became covert nuclear power in 1966 with the help of USA but our case is different. India was threatening Pakistan time to time. In 1999 kargil issue erupted, in 2001 after Delhi parliament attack Indian forces were positioned on boarders, in 2008 Mumbai attacks again sparked tensions between India and Pakistan but due the strength of Pakistan, not even a single Indian soldier crossed the border to attack Pakistan. It gained much respect worldwide and have recognized indirectly.
Dr. Samar also elaborated the strength of Pakistan tactical weapons which were designed to tackle India’s Cold Start Doctrine. Short range tactical weapon Nasr is capable of nuclear warheads was developed with one year which has ability to reach its target within five minutes.
Dr. Samar also told that NSG members take unanimous decisions and if India will be included in it, India could go against any favorable decision for Pakistan.

PM Nawaz’s state of health: need for medical board briefing!

Moeed Pirzada |

We have heard that PM Nawaz will undergo Open Heart Surgery on Tuesday, 2nd June – May Allah grant him complete recovery and health to be able to perform his job and execute his responsibilities.

However given his position as the functional head of Pakistani government, a country of 200 million people facing humungous challenges, the only Muslim country with a nuclear posture its important to have more clarity about his state of health. Such clarity can only come from a credible Medical Board of the British Hospital he is admitted to for his surgery.

This becomes important because apparently Pakistani constitution does not have the provision for a temporary Prime Minister to deal with such situations where a Chief Executive becomes absent for a prolonged period – in this case, Chief Executive also happens to be the foreign Minister.

The way his health issue has been dealt with is surprising – and has given way to all kinds of speculations. Instead of making a formal official press release it was first turned into a media scoop, then statements by some ministers and tweets by family members. So far there has been no official confirmation as to where he is, which hospital he is underdoing his surgery and what exactly he is suffering from. Many also wonder on the quality of medical advice he is receiving. Because in April he was in London apparently for a cardiac checkup; but as soon as he reached back Pakistan he was busy in an unusually hectic schedule of political rallies across Azad Kashmir and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and travelled to foreign destinations. Did his doctors in London, who examined him in April 2016, did not advise him to avoid such hectic activity?

From tweets of Ms. Maryam Nawaz, the only person who has taken pains to provide a bit of scientific and factual information, we have some understanding that PM Nawaz Sharif underwent a procedure, to correct his atrial fibrillation in 2011, and that procedure went horribly wrong leading to perforation of his cardiac wall and now five years later another procedure has to be done to fix the problems that still persist.

From other sources we have heard that in 2011, the accidental perforation lead to massive bleeding from his cardiac wall, a kind of cardiac tamponade and an open heart surgery was then done to fix the situation. Recently we heard that in April he was paralyzed in limbs for 30-40 minutes because a blood clot briefly passed through his brain circulation, fortunately the clot passed through and there was no permanent paralysis. If true that represents a stroke and not a coronary blockage; both situations demand totally different treatments.

The way his health issue has been dealt with is surprising – and has given way to all kinds of speculations. Instead of making a formal official press release it was first turned into a media scoop, then statements by some ministers and tweets by family members.

But these half-baked pieces of information make it necessary that a proper, formal, official briefing be done to the media in London by the Board of the Hospital he is in. Such briefings are routinely done for all important personalties, top government functionaries and even athletes. Informally we learn that he is in Royal Brompton Hospital in London but still there is no official confrimation. Ministers making statements on health issues make no sense – especially the ministers who have never been taken seriously in their own portfolios. Questions abound: What procedure he is now undergoing? Is this a cardiac bypass usually done to relieve blockage of coronary arteries or is this a procedure to fix the adhesions or other anatomical problems that might have been crated by the unfortunate perforation he experienced in 2011. What about the rumors of a stroke and paralysis of lower limbs? Many such questions abound, that can only be answered by a qualified medical board.

This becomes important because apparently Pakistani constitution does not have the provision for a temporary Prime Minister to deal with such situations where a Chief Executive becomes absent for a prolonged period – in this case, Chief Executive also happens to be the foreign Minister.

One hopes that PMLN ministers will quickly realize that PM Nawaz Sharif is the functional head of the government; his health concerns the state and the people of Pakistan; its no more only a family or party matter, and the initial incomplete news have been deliberately leaked by the party and family sources to the media. The way it has been done has raised questions. Now its time to provide complete information to the public to end all kinds of speculations.

PM Nawaz’s State of Health: Need for Medical Board briefing!

But these half baked pieces of information make it necessary that a proper, formal, official briefing be done to the media in London by the Board of the Hospital he is in.
