Reham Khan’s exclusive talk with Moeed Pirzada

An exclusive talk with Tehrek e Insaf Chairman Imran Khan’s Ex wife Reham Khan at Banni Gala on 7th May, 2015 just few months after they got married. Reham khan is a media personal and was doing her own current Affairs show before getting married.

Dr Moeed Pirzada raised some important questions and controversies attached which are in at that time in media that Reham Khan will join PTI politics but she denied in the interview. She said that being dual nationality holder UK and Pakistan she is not allowed to take part in Pakistan politics but she is interested in social welfare projects that’s why she became ambassador of street children in Khyber PakhtonKha Province. Also there were scandals about her alleged fake educational degrees but she cleverly covered that during the interview.

The Forman Journalism Society Holds Talk By Dr. Moeed Pirzada

The Forman Journalism Society of the Mass Communication Department arranged a lecture by Dr Moeed Pirzada, a renowned journalist, political analyst, blogger and lead anchor at Dunya TV on 30 April 2015.

Faculty members, both from FC and other institutions, along with a great number of students attended the session in the Center for Public Policy and Governance. Dean of Humanities at FCC, Dr Waseem Anwar, and Chairperson of the Mass Communications Department Mr Muhammad Ali welcomed the guest to the session. Ms Faiza Rafique, advisor FJS, acted as a moderator.

Dr Pirzada started off by giving a brief introduction of himself, referring to his academic and early professional background that helped him discharge the role of a media person efficiently. He said his work as a general surgeon, a civil servant and with the UN, all helped him achieve the ability of analysis, scrutinizing complex and multifaceted political problems and their implications in Pakistan.

To explain the working of the Pakistani media (mainly TVs), he invoked Marshall McLuhan’s ‘medium is the message’; along with other concepts such as “architecture is the code.” He said that the law/power lies in the structure (of the media) that eventually shapes up its content. He emphasized that TV by its very nature is a superficial medium. He said that every medium has its limitations. He also showed a clip of Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan at the Islamabad Literary Festival underlining the importance of books and book reading culture (books being a different medium, with a different message).

Dr Moeed said reading a novel is different from watching a drama or film which is an adaptation of it. However, he said that just as readers of the same book throughout the world share a common feeling, members of a nation can unite on TV by shared feelings of grief, tyranny, tragedy, failure, victory and aspirations, etc.

He said the media persons (on TV) draw strength from presenting themselves as saviors – Robin Hood-like characters who are out to help the poor and the downtrodden against the mighty and the aggressor. He said the same heroics can be traced in films. He also showed clips from films where a hero, a courageous character, stands up against all odds to alleviate the suffering of the helpless. He said the same applied to a degree to TV anchors, as they too present themselves as saviors despite the fact that the media’s model is predicated largely on ratings and profits more than public interest. He said it is a bitter reality that many useful subjects remain off-limits because the idea doesn’t fit well with the scheme of ratings and business.

He said the corporate sector owns most of the Pakistani media. He said the media itself is an expensive business to run, with a trivial margin of profit, and severe competition for ad revenue. However, he said the clout that it brings cannot be discounted.

Concluding his presentation, he emphasized formation of better legal frameworks for effective regulation of the media industry. He also called for studying and adapting media models which are effectively delivering in other countries.

Why you must read Henry Kissinger’s “World Order”?

Moeed Pirzada |

Why you must read Henry Kissinger’s “World Order”? – Unlike many books these days that read like a Master student’s exam passing thesis with the help of quotes stolen from internet, this book, World Order, is a magisterial work from someone who combines academic insights with his own experiences of helping shape a global order as an actor on the stage. Many novels have been written about love by those who had never fallen head down in love and you feel the triviality and shallowness at every page. This happens with most books on world of politics by those who don’t know the world and politics. But this is a book by someone who knows what he is talking off; he will help you see the difference between those who phony characters who express wishes (we should do this and that and bla bla; this should not be happening etc) and those “real men and women” who have the challenge of shaping outcomes and delivering results.

By the time you will come to finish the book, you will feel the difference between “Information and Knowledge” and Knowledge and Wisdom.

Once you have gone through this book, you will come to understand what is “World Order” and why it is needed and why there is so much conflict. Kissinger gives you a bird eye view of the evolution of “political orders” across mankind’s history; this involves Islam’s World Order and you get to understand why ancient Persians relied more upon “Shiaism” to maintain their uniqueness in a political order initially created by Arab revolutionary spirit and conquests. His main focus, however, remains on the world order created by treaty of Westphalia in 1648, and how this was based on a non-ideological balance of power and how this was gradually changed by the American insistence on their “American Exceptionalism” from 1st world war onwards and then imposed on a grand level after the world fell to the American power at the end of the Second world war.

Ironically though Kissinger never compares “Islamic World Order” of “world of peace and world of war” with the American “Exceptional-ism” by the time you reach end you can see that Muslim’s demand that world should conform to their unique values of a just society and salvation are little different from the American (and now broadly western) insistence on liberal democracy which has assumed the form of a post-Christian western religion based on the political experiences of American democracy. Like the initial Muslims, Americans are telling the world including Muslims and Chinese: We will tell you how to run your little world and societies. But this is not what Kissinger writes; this is what he knows, understands but cannot write, but this is what you nevertheless understand. Similarly he tells you without saying in words that how he thinks that American President, Woodrow Wilson was a “confused prophet of change” and how Barack Obama has mastered the art of winning the elections without having a grand vision for the American power. Kissinger does not say this, but you know that he is telling you.

What is the relation between “power” and “legitimacy”. Suddenly it will stand out to you that elections for instance are a political exercise to impart legitimacy to a political order and when there credibility is at doubt then political order becomes weak; Is not this what happened in Pakistan after the May 2013 Elections? And why Nawaz govt had to agree to Judicial Commission to restore legitimacy to their system of control and so on.

Many novels have been written about love by those who had never fallen head down in love and you feel the triviality and shallowness at every page.

By the time you will come to finish the book, you will feel the difference between “Information and Knowledge” and Knowledge and Wisdom. I for instance tried reading a book by a former Pakistani Ambassador and could instantaneously see that he has collected quotes like a college student to prove himself instead of understanding the issues; and that it was not about his understanding of issues but his desire to please his American readers. I put it down because I realized that this is not worth my time and effort.

Ghalib had said about his own Indian world of 19th century: “Bazicha e Itfal hay yeh dunya meray agay” – Kissinger, writing at 91, makes you feel the same about the world we all share. Is he biased? Yes! he is; all political theorists are; but you know you are reading an American point of view and you discount and you react at several points but those moments of disagreement and discord give you more insights and learning. Apologies & Regrets Easy but Accepting Mistake Difficult…!

Moeed Pirzada |

Apologies & Regrets Easy but Accepting Mistake Difficult: This afternoon I was hit by a motorist. She was waiting at a cross-section to a major road, and I, a pedestrian, was about to cross a small, 10 feet road, across the major road. She perhaps could not see because of traffic on the main road that interfered with the sight. However as soon as the traffic passed she throttled at huge speed and came and hit me, dragging and throwing me off road.

It was my first ever road accident and I realized it is a matter of seconds between life and death. I fell next to a wooden bracket with lots of pointed metallic projections but none hit me. As I recovered my orientation I found myself bleeding from several points on arms and legs, due to drag on the rough road, but realized how lucky I was that despite a huge impact no serious injury.

I realized saying sorry and regrets are all easy in our culture but accepting exact mistake is difficult, even when we don’t have any liability culture.

Next I found myself looking at the Madam Irresponsible Driver, who was in panic, sorry, apologetic, who regretted all this, told me that she knows me, had even met me at some conference or something and wanted to take me to a hospital. I asked her: At what speed you were driving? this was a small residential road. Few other pedestrians who had seen all this happening reminded her that she was very fast and suddenly accelerated. Her innocent response was that I did not see her and suddenly came in front of her car. Was I committing suicide?

I realized saying sorry and regrets are all easy in our culture but accepting exact mistake is difficult, even when we don’t have any liability culture. This is what I observe continuously in politics too. I just wanted her to realize that sudden acceleration may work at motorway but at inter-sections, it can cause accidents, but realized that more important for me is to stop bleeding and getting injections as my wounds were all soiled by mud.

She insisted that she should take me to the hospital. I thought given her driving skills and state of mind of guilt and panic, it will be safe to walk myself; I walked to Ali Medical Center. It was painful to walk but I was so happy that every limb was working and when I reached emergency for dressing and anti-tetanus I discovered a young man who was being stitched after a motorbike accident. My pain ended too.

Now lets focus on NA-246 & how stupid arguments are being advanced…not easy to accept the exact issue! South Asian Curse!

Many of you will remember Imtiaz Khan!

Moeed Pirzada |

Dear All, Many of you will remember Imtiaz Khan who passionately contributed to the debates on this page. Heated arguments between him and Himanshu amused many and irritated others. I have learnt that he died on 30th March in Canada.

I never knew much about him but from his arguments and his criticism of myself or my opinions, I could guess that he was a hyper-nationalist, a super Pakistani patriot whose yardstick of nationalism I often failed to meet. Maybe if he were alive in the first week of April he would have forgiven me after reading my piece on “Pakistani Liberals”!!

May Allah bless his soul and give fortitude to all his family and loved ones to bear his loss! Amen! We will definitely miss his enthusiasm and feverish energy on this page. I wonder who will now stimulate Himanshu into his frenzied actions; sometimes in the rivalry, we do have a meaningful relationship!
